Does anyone know why all the applications/games that came in the rar file (or CD) that go with this book would make Vista 64 pop up with a "has stopped working" error message when the user presses ESC to exit?  The source I type in and compile myself does this too.

I also noticed that the executable in the "tankwar-final" folder reports that it is missing msvcr71d.dll when I try to run it.

Okay.

If anyone could address the second part of the question that would be helpful.

None of the examples provided exit properly.  If I compile the examples, they compile, and then there is an unhandled exception error on exit.  Using the precompiled examples provided by the book, the same error exists.  I have to use the task manager to close out the examples or they take up memory until a reboot.

I guess this book predates Vista 64 far enough that the software can't handle running properly in that environment - or have others made it work?  I've tried several versions of the allegro precompiled binaries and a couple of different compilers with the same results.

Sorry, don't use Vista 64. You might find some answers at www.allegro.cc. There are many Allegro compiler configurations explained over there.
